World Science Day: Plateau reaffirms commitment to science-driven development

By Marie-Therese Nanlong

Jos — The Plateau State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing peace and sustainable development through science, technology, and innovation as the world celebrates the 2025 World Science Day for Peace and Development.

The State Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr Cletus Shurkuk, who disclosed this during the event themed “Trust, Transformation, and Tomorrow: The Science We Need for 2050,” said the commemoration offers a global reminder of the role science plays in fostering peace, progress, and problem-solving in society.

Speaking with journalists in Jos, Shurkuk noted World Science Day, established by UNESCO and first celebrated in 2002, aims to strengthen public awareness of science’s relevance in daily life and promote collaboration among governments, research institutions, and educational bodies.

He stressed that beyond providing technical solutions, science remains a bridge for international cooperation and an engine for development, and explained that this year’s theme encapsulates the values needed to guide the global scientific community.

“The vision of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, is to drive peace and development in Plateau through science, technology, and innovation. This commitment reflects in the upcoming Plateau State Festival of Innovation, Science, and Technology, which will showcase local innovations and highlight the creative potential of our people,” he said.

Dr Shurkuk emphasised that science is central to addressing issues such as climate change, public health, and technological inequality, noting that sustainable development and peace are impossible without scientific advancement.

He called for stronger collaboration between academia, the private sector, and policymakers to ensure the responsible use of scientific knowledge for the benefit of society.

Activities marking this year’s celebration in the State include lectures, exhibitions, quizzes, panel discussions, and visits to selected schools to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The Commissioner urged stakeholders to sustain trust in science and use it as a tool for building a smarter and more prosperous Plateau, and maintained, “Science is not just about experiments; it is about solving real-world problems. Let us ensure that the innovations of today lead to a greener, more peaceful, and prosperous future built on trust and driven by transformation.”
