Trump’s threat: We’re monitoring situation in Nigeria – Russia

Must read

Russia says it is closely following developments surrounding reports of possible United States military action in Nigeria, following comments by former US President Donald Trump.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, disclosed this on Friday while responding to a question from Anadolu Agency during a press briefing in Moscow.

Zakharova urged Washington to respect international law and act responsibly in its approach to global security matters.

“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” she said.

On November 1, Trump announced that he had directed the Pentagon to prepare options for possible military measures against terrorist groups in Nigeria, citing the need to protect Christian communities.

Responding to another question about Kazakhstan joining the Abraham Accords, Zakharova said Moscow sees no need to comment on the development for now.

Kazakhstan confirmed its participation in the accords on Friday, a day after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the move in a phone call held in the presence of Trump.

Meanwhile, Zakharova expressed concern over increasing reports of Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreements along the Lebanese border.

She said Moscow continues to engage with both the Israeli and Lebanese authorities, emphasising the importance of avoiding actions that could lead to renewed violence.

“We convey to all parties involved our firm stance on the need to avoid actions that may trigger an escalation of violence and another round of armed conflict,” she said.

Zakharova reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to maintain peace and stability in Lebanon and the wider Middle East.
