condemns fresh Benue South attacks

By John Alechenu

Ex-Benue State Commissioner for Finance, Dr. David Olofu, has urged the federal government to demonstrate a heightened sense of urgency in dealing with terrorists under any guise to demonstrate commitment to ending the scourge.

Dr. Olufu said this in response to the recent attacks in Anwule-Oglewu community in Ohimini Local Government Area and Rijo in Ado Local Government Area both located in Benue South Senatorial District, by suspected armed herdsmen.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Chieftain who is seeking to contest the  Benue South Senatorial election in the 2027 election, expressed deep concerns over the persistent and unprovoked attacks on farming communities in Benue State.

According to him, the attack on Anwule-Oglewu community in Ohimini Local Government Area and Rijo in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, led to “the tragic loss of numerous lives and wanton destruction of property worth millions of naira.”

He equally charged the Benue State government to demonstrate empathy and greater concern by renewing its commitment tonaddressing this scourge, which has left a trail of devastation and despair in its wake.

The Senatorial hopeful lamented the unbridled attacks by suspected murderous herdsmen, which have rendered vulnerable communities in Benue South Senatorial District perpetual targets.

Olofu described the carnage in the state as “unacceptable and must be stopped by the Federal Government”, emphasizing that those responsible for internal security must rise to the challenge.

Dr. Olofu further made a case for community policing to be championed by youths in various communities, stressing that the call became imperative in view of the inability of security agencies to effectively safeguard communities.

He reiterated that security is every body’s business and should no longer be relinquished to government alone, stressing that, “as it is, we are left with the difficult option of taking our destinies into our hands”.

The former commissioner decried what he called the lackadaisical attitude of government and some of its functionaries in the consistent attacks of Benue Communities which he described as a carefully orchestrated carnage aimed at obliterating “our people.”

The Senatorial contender further appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to all the victims in the affected communities to ameliorate their plight.
