Russia-Ukraine peace talks ramp up; Epstein files backlash persists

Must read

International leaders are participating in high-stakes peace talks geared towards ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently presented a 20-point peace plan to his counterparts with clauses that outline a demilitarization zone, security guarantees and an $800 billion fund to help rebuild the war-torn nation.

His refusal to cede pieces of land to Russia remain deeply embedded in his proposals, proving to be a sobering roadblock for officials from the Trump administration working to negotiate the conflict’s end.

President Trump and Zelensky are set to meet in Florida on Sunday for face-to-face talks. The confab will follow several meetings earlier this year, which have failed to produce a ceasefire agreement.

“Every meeting and every conversation brings us closer to the desired result,” Zelensky told the Kyiv Post, ahead of his planned meeting with Trump.

However, the president shared hesitancy about Zelensky’s plan.

“He doesn’t have anything until I approve it. So we’ll see what he’s got,” Trump told Politico, in regards to the Ukrainian leader’s push for an end to the more than three year war.

Lawmakers in Washington have debated amongst themselves about the war overseas, urging international leaders to develop a path to peace.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who previously served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and has commented on the war in the past, is slated to appear on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” to share more about his perspective on the conflict in Eastern Europe.

Earlier this year, the Wisconsin Republican denounced a foreign aid package that allocated around $61 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza and other war-torn zones and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) will also appear on “Sunday Morning Futures” and is likely to hammer the importance of a timeline for tranquility in Ukraine.

Mullin, a member of the Committee on Armed Forces, may also discuss recent U.S. strikes targeting Islamic State militants in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin will appear on Fox News’s “The Sunday Briefing,” where she may address the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts after some recent attacks authorities pinned on foreign nationals.

In early December, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said it would place a hold on all pending asylum applications and will pause all benefit requests by foreign nationals from many countries deemed “high risk” by the Trump administration.

This comes on top of the new $100,000 H-1B visa fees and guidelines directing officers to weigh an individual’s “good moral character” before greenlighting citizenship applications.

As foreign tensions brew, elected officials have called for the Justice Department to speed up its release of files from the estate of convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) has been an outspoken advocate for Epstein survivors and has urged the Trump administration to swiftly publicize information on the late financier.

“As one told me, ‘this Epstein bomb is about to drop and no [one] wants to defend a pedo-protector. It’s just a matter of time,’” Swalwell said in an October thread on the social platform X.

Swalwell is likely to discuss the contents of newly released materials during an appearance on MS NOW’s “The Weekend” and look ahead to what may be unveiled in the next batch of declassified Epstein files.
