The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Friday led officers and men of the Nigerian Army in special prayers in remembrance of the late former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who died on Nov. 5, 2024.
Shaibu, who spoke shortly after the Jumat prayer held in Abuja, described the late Lagbaja as a patriotic and selfless officer who made immense contributions to the defence and security architecture of Nigeria.
He said the series of remembrance activities, including church and mosque services, were organised to honour the late Army chief and other fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.
“Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja contributed greatly to the defence of this country. It’s already one year since his passing, and it is only fitting that we remember him.
“His legacy is firmly rooted in selfless service and exemplary leadership. He led us all very well, and I urge officers and men to continue to embody those values,” he said.
The Army chief also called on Nigerians to continue to support the Armed Forces with prayers and commitment toward securing the country.
He prayed for God’s continued comfort and strength for the family of the late Army chief and other families of fallen heroes.
“All nations depend on their military for defence. We must therefore support our armed forces through prayers and cooperation so that together we can secure this great nation,” he added.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Jumat service has the former COAS, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai and top officers from across the services.
The remembrance of the late Lagbaja would continue with interdenominational church service on Sunday as well as outreaches. (NAN)
