Following a night attack that left two men dead and one abducted in Sarkin Noma, Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, angry youths have staged a major protest, blocking the Lafia–Makurdi highway and demanding urgent government intervention.
The attack occurred amid renewed global concerns over insecurity, highlighted by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened between 11:30 p.m. and midnight when suspected armed herdsmen invaded the community.
An eyewitness, who declined to be named, said:
“Exactly between 11:30 p.m. and 12 a.m., some suspected Fulani herders invaded the community, killed two persons, and kidnapped one.”
A youth leader in the community, Mr. Ogu Iliya, said the protest became necessary to draw government attention to the worsening insecurity in the area.
He explained that about fifty gunmen stormed the community around midnight, shooting sporadically before abducting an elderly resident.
According to Iliya, the youths mobilized in self-defence, but two of them were shot dead during the confrontation.
He lamented that the latest attack is the twelfth in recent times, leaving residents in constant fear.
“Any resident who sells their farm produce and returns home at night is at risk. These gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, kidnap people and demand ransom. It has become unbearable. The elderly man taken last night is still missing, and we do not know his condition,” he said.
Outraged by the killings, the youths carried the corpses of the two victims to the major highway and blocked it, halting vehicular movement along the busy Lafia–Makurdi route.
In a reaction, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Nasarawa State Command, SP Ramhan Nansel, said security operatives led by the Commissioner of Police, Shettima Mohammed Jauro, were on their way to the scene of the incident.
