ABUJA – The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Tuesday as the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), urged party members nationwide to boycott the planned national convention in Ibadan, insisting that a new court order has invalidated the process.
Their position came in response to the suit filed by former governor Sule Lamido, which produced a court pronouncement that the Wike bloc says has thrown fresh legal uncertainty over the convention.
Speaking to Vanguard in Abuja, the Acting National Youth Leader of the PDP, Timothy Osadolor, said the party cannot legitimately proceed with the Ibadan gathering until its internal disputes are resolved and stakeholders agree on the next steps.
“Well, I’ve told you before. What they are doing in Ibadan is just an early Christmas party. But again, even the early Christmas parties is still not going to hold,” he said.
Osadolor argued that the ruling secured earlier on Tuesday further discredited the event.
“I’m sure you are aware of the court pronouncements from the suit filed by former governor Sule Lamido earlier today. That has also told them that the early Christmas party is not even properly constituted and organised,” the PDP youth leader said.
He urged PDP members across the country not to risk travel or spend money attending an exercise he insisted has no legal or organisational foundation.
“So, I want to use this medium to tell all PDP faithfuls and supporters across the country that in their bid to look forward to a better party and a convention, they should not fall for the trap of risking their lives on the road or by air to Ibadan to waste money, time and other resources,” Osadolor warned.
He dismissed the entire plan as futile, saying: “Whatever they are doing in Ibadan is a charade. And the governor of the Oyo State knows this in his heart that he is just lighting the candle in the wind and it will not stand.”
Osadolor added that Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Muhammed had already cancelled the Ibadan exercise, a decision he said remains binding until the National Working Committee (NWC) meets to decide the next steps.
“It remains so until the National Working Committee and other stakeholders of the party meet and give further directive. For now, that cycle of Ibadan has been put on hold,” he said.
Osadolor stressed that the court judgment reinforced this position: “It has been put on hold by one of the highest courts of the land, which is the High Court. So, those court judgments have vacated and the party pronouncements are also reversed.”
Meanwhile, attempts to reach Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the embattled National Publicity Secretary aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde’s bloc pushing for the convention to go ahead on 15 and 16 November, were unsuccessful as calls to his phone were not answered at press time.
