Vice President Vance dismissed online speculation about the state of his relationship with second lady Usha Vance, saying the couple’s marriage was “as strong as it’s ever been.”
“With anything in life, you take the good with the bad,” he said in an interview with NBC News. “You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some very good things that come along with it, too.”
“But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been, and I think Usha’s really taken to it, and it’s been kind of cool to see how she’s developed and evolved in this new role,” he added.
In response to a question about whether stories about their marriage — such as a recent report about his wife not wearing her wedding ring during a November visit to a military base alongside first lady Melania Trump — are difficult for the couple, Vance said he and Usha “get a kick out of” the online speculation.
“It’s funny,” Vance said. “I don’t actually think that it’s tough.”
Though he acknowledged there were certain ways it was difficult for his family, he said it was “a sacrifice that we signed up for.”
Vance fired back at former White House press secretary Jen Psaki earlier this year after she also suggested there was trouble in his marriage. Psaki implied that Usha might need saving from her husband, comments that Vance called “disgraceful.”
Vance’s marriage has been the subject of public speculation since he rose to prominence as Trump’s pick for the vice presidency during the 2024 election cycle. He has defended Usha against comments about her Indian identity, though he recently came under fire for comments regarding her religion.
At an October event hosted by Turning Point USA at the University of Mississippi, the vice president said hopes Usha is “somehow moved by the church” and will convert to Christianity. He later clarified his comments on the social platform X.
“She is not a Christian and has no plans to convert, but like many people in an interfaith marriage–or any interfaith relationship–I hope she may one day see things as I do,” he wrote.
