A Kano-based civil advocacy group, Grassroots Initiative Concept, has urged the Senate to urgently confirm the nomination of Ramat Abdullahi as the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), describing him as a person of integrity, competence, and proven public service.
In an open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, the group expressed concern over the delay in Abdullahi’s confirmation despite his appearance before the Senate Committee on Power and his name being listed on the Senate Order Paper for October 22, 2025.
The group said it was “surprising and deeply unsettling” that the confirmation did not take place, alleging that “certain vested interests” may be working to stall the process.
“As citizens deeply invested in Nigeria’s stability and democratic growth, we believe it is both our duty and right to constructively engage the institutions that represent us and safeguard the national interest,” the letter stated.
It added that Engr. Abdullahi’s nomination was made “in recognition of his distinguished record of service, integrity, and alignment with reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“Over the past decade, Engr. Abdullahi has served diligently and honorably in various capacities, ranging from local governance to advisory roles within the Kano State government and the private sector. His qualifications and leadership experience make him eminently suited to lead an institution as strategic as NERC,” the group said.
The Grassroots Initiative Concept commended President Tinubu for nominating Abdullahi and urged the Senate to “stand on the side of fairness, patriotism, and progress” by confirming his appointment.
“Strong institutions are the foundation of a strong nation. Where institutions function with fairness and integrity, the people remain the greatest beneficiaries,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming confidence in the leadership of the National Assembly, the group expressed belief that Abdullahi’s confirmation would strengthen Nigeria’s energy sector and contribute meaningfully to national development.
“We trust in your leadership, your commitment to justice, and your fidelity to strengthening democratic institutions. History will remember this Senate for standing on the side of fairness and national interest,” the letter concluded.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the Kano State Governor and other key government officials.
