‘It’s not your father’s house’, Shehu Sani tells Nigerians with revoked visas to return

Must read

A former senator representing Kaduna Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has urged Nigerians and other African nationals to begin returning to their home countries from the United States.

The call comes in the wake of mass visa revocations under the Donald Trump administration. Shehu warned that foreign citizens affected by the visa cancellations should leave the US voluntarily before Immigration and Customs Enforcement takes enforcement action.

He further reminded Nigerians and Africans living abroad that no matter how long they reside in foreign countries, they cannot be fully integrated, emphasising that their true home remains their country of origin.

He wrote, “Nigerians and other thousands of Africans whose visas were recently revoked by President Trump should hasten and leave the country and return home before they get arrested by ICE.

“No matter how long you live in the comfort of your adopted home, you will someday be reminded that it’s not your father’s house.”

Recall Vanguard reported that the United States Department of State revoked the visas of more than 80,000 individuals, including Nigerians and other foreign nationals, as part of a sweeping immigration enforcement initiative under former President Donald Trump’s administration.

In a statement released last Thursday, the department said the action was in line with Trump’s commitment to protecting U.S. national interests and security – a move it described as “promises made, promises kept.”

According to the department, the revocations were based on various offenses, including assault, theft, and driving under the influence (DUI). Data from 2024 shows that 16,000 individuals lost their visas due to DUI-related offenses, 12,000 for assault, and 8,000 for theft. Additional reasons included links to terrorism, extremist activity, public safety risks, and violations of visa conditions.
