In a surprising turn of events, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Prof Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, has now emerged as one of the establishment’s favourite for the National Chairmanship of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC.
Since the exit of Dr Abdullahi Ganduje on June 27, President Bola Tinubu had kept party leaders guessing as to his choice of the next chairman of the party.
In Nigeria, the President often wields considerable influence on who leads the ruling party, often appointing his choice while the rest of the party leaders and members are expected to fall in line by ratifying the appointment during a national convention or accepting it during a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee NEC pending the next convention.
Although, Yilwatda was not publicly known to be in the equation before now, news of his possible emergence filtered in after a late night meeting on Wednesday between the president and governors of the party.
A section of the party is however still reportedly pushing the aspiration of a former Governor of Nasarawa state, Senator Tanko Almakura.
Those who are opposed to Almakura are said to have argued the need to have a Christian in the top leadership of the party, to reflect some balance, due to the Muslim-Muslim presidency.
Today’s NEC meeting which starts by 2pm at the Presidential Villa is expected to finally put paid to all the speculations.
