Germany reaffirms 2045 climate neutrality goal ahead of COP30

Must read

Germany’s Bundestag on Wednesday reaffirmed its goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2045, days before the UN Climate Change Conference kicks off in Belém, Brazil.

A joint motion concerning the COP30 conference was put forward in parliament by the governing parties – Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democrats.

In it, the government’s delegation was also urged to advocate in Belém for a global energy transition, industrial decarbonization and a worldwide halt to deforestation.

The motion calls on Germany to encourage countries such as China to contribute more to climate aid for poorer nations.

The COP30 conference, which is expected to attract tens of thousands of participants from around 200 countries, officially opens on Monday.

Several heads of state and government, including Merz, are scheduled to arrive in Brazil at the end of the week for preparatory meetings.
