Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called for increased support for families of fallen and retired members of the Armed Forces, stressing that such assistance is crucial in recognition of their sacrifices towards national unity and stability.
The governor also reaffirmed his commitment to redeem an earlier pledge to employ 50 children of fallen military heroes in the state.
Fubara made the remarks on Tuesday during the Emblem Appeal Launch to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
He described the theme of the event, “Sacrifice and Unity: Honouring Our Heroes,” as timely and significant.
According to him, “Sacrifice, unity, honouring our heroes: it is very significant because, just like the drama sketch here explained, these are people who lived their lives for Nigeria.
“These are people who made sacrifices for the unity of this country, and the least we can do is to appreciate them, not just by coming here annually for the emblem launch.
“It should go beyond that to supporting those who are still alive and appreciating the dead through every other means available to us.”
The governor noted that retired soldiers devoted the greater part of their lives to defending the nation and maintaining peace and stability across the country.
Reiterating the state government’s commitment to their welfare, Fubara urged the Nigerian Legion to forward the names of 50 wards for employment.
He said, “I want to say that the chairman somehow indicted me here, but thank God he did not say I am owing them. He said we made a promise to employ 50 of their wards.
“It was an order I gave. I am not the one who will start doing it. I expected that a list should have been forwarded to my office, and if I did not act on it, that is when you would have come publicly to raise the issue.
“So please bring the list, and if you have brought it and I do not do anything, then let us see.”
Fubara reminded participants that the annual event was meant to support families of fallen heroes and those still alive who are casualties of the nation’s survival.
“So I want to urge everyone to ensure that you support this emblem launch for the well-being of the legion. As a government, we have always stood by them.”
