ABUJA — THE Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Thursday proposed the creation of a Presidential Task Force on ‘Detty December.’

Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the council meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, at the Council Chamber, presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister explained that the new inter‑agency body will coordinate Nigeria’s fast‑growing end‑of‑year tourism and festival economy.

Musawa said the initiative would unify federal and state efforts to position Nigeria, especially Lagos, as a major global December destination.

She explained that the Council also approved the adoption of key national tourism brands, including “Naija Season”, developed by the National Council for Arts and Culture, which curates festivals and cultural events across all 36 states from January to December.

“The second memo was the development of adoption of the tourism brands. Of course, we know Detty December is just around the corner, as it actually started in Lagos and homecoming East capital vibes, and there’s a very big one called Naija season.

“So these brands have been adopted as a national catalyst for tourism and creative industry, and it becomes a presidential initiative for Detty December.

“We have asked the President to establish a Presidential Task Force on dirty December,” she explained.

According to her, the Federal Government will also provide institutional support to Lagos State, which hosts the highest concentration of December festivals, concerts and inbound diaspora traffic.

“The task force will allow all the different interdependencies that we need.

“These include different MDAs in aviation, interior, power that we need to ensure that we provide the international community with the destination for Detty December, and of course, provide the support that Lagos State needs from the Federal Government so that we can really maximize on the potential of Detty December and other festivals around the country, and also to build it as a global brand,” she explained.

Musawa added that the initiative is expected to attract private‑sector participation and strengthen Nigeria’s soft‑power footprint.

“Detty December,” a slang for Nigeria’s December‑long wave of festivals, concerts, fashion shows and nightlife events, has grown into a major economic driver, drawing returnees from the diaspora and visitors from across Africa.

The Calabar Carnival has assumed international status, whileLagos alone hosts dozens of premium events such as concerts, award shows and cultural festivals, generating significant revenue for hotels, airlines, logistics firms and the creative sector.
