Despite two Federal High Court rulings restraining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its 2025 National Convention, the Enugu State chapter has declared its preparedness for the event scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The court in Abuja had blocked the convention, citing the party’s failure to comply with legal requirements, including publishing a timetable for members and issuing a 21-day notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). A lawsuit by former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, who claimed he was denied the opportunity to purchase a chairmanship nomination form, also contributed to the court’s ruling.
However, Acting State Chairman of the PDP in Enugu, Hon. Steve Oruruo, said the state chapter is fully prepared to participate. Speaking after meetings with party organs in Enugu, he confirmed that all logistical and organizational arrangements, including travel for delegates, have been completed.
“I just returned from Abuja where I secured all the necessary materials for the convention. We have held meetings with our delegates, distributed uniforms, and finalized travel logistics. Our delegates from the South East, particularly Enugu, will be airlifted from Akanu Ibiam International Airport,” Oruruo stated.
He emphasized that the Enugu PDP remains a strong and united force despite recent defections, sending about 81 delegates to the convention and potentially sponsoring additional participants depending on resources.
Highlighting the importance of unity and inclusivity, Oruruo said consultations with all stakeholders have intensified to ensure a cohesive representation. “Opposition is a very difficult thing to do. The only impetus for a strong opposition is a sense of unison — togetherness and oneness,” he noted.
Oruruo expressed optimism that the convention will foster internal democracy, rebuild trust, and promote reconciliation across the party. “All interests within the party should reach a compromise and find a consensus where everyone is carried along. No faction is irrelevant,” he added.
The Acting Chairman also stressed the need for capable leadership, cautioning against suppressing dissenting voices. “Inclusiveness is vital for sustaining democracy. If we block plurality of opinions, it will mark the beginning of the end of our democracy,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming faith in the Nigerian electorate, stating that credible candidates from a united PDP will ultimately earn the people’s trust at the ballot box.
