Doug Jones makes it official in Alabama

Must read

Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.

* While former Sen. Doug Jones had already indicated that he was running for governor in Alabama next year, the Democrat made it official with a formal campaign launch late last week.

* In the wake of the Republican-led state Senate in Indiana rejecting the White House’s redistricting gambit, Donald Trump renewed his rhetorical offensive against GOP legislators who refused to obey his commands. Late Friday, the president singled out Senate Republican leader Rodric Bray by name.

* On a related note, Indiana’s Republican governor, Mike Braun, blamed last week’s failure on “a small group” of “misguided” GOP state senators. In reality, however, a majority of the Republicans in the state Senate opposed Trump’s scheme.

* Earlier this year, former federal prosecutor Ryan Crosswell released a great resignation letter when Trump’s Justice Department dropped corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Now, Crosswell is running a Democratic congressional campaign in Pennsylvania, and he’s using his resignation letter in his stump speech.

* Speaking of the Keystone State, when Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania last week, state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, the front-runner for the GOP’s gubernatorial nomination, was noticeably absent.

* In Maryland, former Rep. David Trone, who ran a competitive but unsuccessful Senate campaign last year, is eyeing a comeback: The Democrat announced late last week that he’s running for his old seat, setting up a primary race against Rep. April McClain Delaney.

* And in Minnesota, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell made it official late last week, formally launching a Republican gubernatorial campaign. The prolific conspiracy theorist joins a crowded GOP field hoping to take on Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, who’s seeking a third term.
