CUPP: Tinubu, APC already rattled by emerging opposition coalition

Must read

By John Alechenu, Abuja

The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has said that recent comments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the coalition of opposition parties reveal deep-seated fears within the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the 2027 general elections.

National Secretary of CUPP, Chief Peter Ameh, stated this in an interview with Vanguard in Abuja on Thursday. He described President Tinubu’s remarks as a sign of political anxiety masked as confidence.

“In a recent statement, Mr. President attempted to project confidence in response to the growing coalition of opposition forces,” Ameh said. “However, his remarks reveal a leader unsettled by the unified front challenging his administration. The opposition remains steadfast, and the President’s superficial display of strength should not be taken seriously.”

He dismissed recent defections to the All Progressives Organization (APO) — a political platform sympathetic to the President — as inconsequential, insisting that those switching allegiance lack real electoral strength.

“Those switching sides lack significant political value, having relied on the influence of opposition leaders to secure their own elections. They bring no advantage to bolster the President’s reelection bid,” he added.

Ameh further argued that the Tinubu administration has failed to improve the living conditions of Nigerians, pointing to worsening economic hardship as a critical factor that could cost the APC its hold on power come 2027.

“As the 2027 elections approach, it is clear that the President stands on sinking ground, unable to escape the imminent defeat that awaits him due to his poor handling of the economy,” Ameh said.

He warned the APC not to repeat the mistake of the former ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which he recalled dismissed the merger of opposition forces in 2013–2014 — a coalition that ultimately unseated President Goodluck Jonathan.

“History is repeating itself. The then-ruling party underestimated the resolve of the opposition and paid the price. Today, the APC is showing the same arrogance,” he warned.

Ameh reaffirmed CUPP’s commitment to building a credible alternative ahead of 2027, adding that the coalition is determined to deliver “the change Nigerians deserve.”
