Canadian passport continues to top US passport in latest global ranking [Full List]

Global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners has released its latest passport index, with Canada once again securing a spot in the world’s top 10 most powerful passports.

In the Henley Passport Index published on July 22, Canada ranked eighth globally, tied with the United Arab Emirates and Estonia.

The ranking is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), measuring the number of destinations passport holders can visit without obtaining a visa in advance.

According to the report, Canadian passport holders now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 184 countries.

This marks a slight dip from January 2025, when the Canadian passport ranked seventh and provided access to 188 destinations. Still, Canada maintains a stronger global position than the United States, which has slipped to 10th place — edging closer to falling out of the top 10 for the first time since the Index began in 2006.

At the top of the list, Singapore leads the world, offering its citizens visa-free access to 193 destinations. Japan and South Korea share second place with access to 190 countries.

Seven European countries — Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain — tied for third, each granting their passport holders entry to 189 destinations without a prior visa.

Henley & Partners also highlighted notable movers in the rankings. “India has recorded the largest jump in rankings over the past six months, climbing from the 85th position to the 77th position,” the firm stated, citing the addition of two visa-free destinations. Meanwhile, “Saudi Arabia has made the biggest gain in visa-free access,” with four new destinations added since January.

However, long-standing passport powers such as the UK and the US continue to trend downward. Since January 2025, both have dropped one position.

Over the past decade, “the passports with the largest fall are Venezuela (down 15 spots), followed by the US (eight), Vanuatu (six), the UK (five), and Canada (four),” the report noted.

Despite the decline, the Canadian passport remains a highly valuable document, not only for international access but also for the ease of returning to Canada.

Citizenship is often acquired automatically by birth or descent, while naturalized citizens must live in the country for at least three years as permanent residents before applying.
