Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has refuted assertions that Federal Government managed airports are not insured.
Former commandant of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, Group Captain John Ojikutu, retd, and Chief Executive Officer of Overland Airways, Mr Edward Boyo, had faulted federal government for removing Part 18 from the new Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, Nig. CARs, that compels FAAN to ensure all the country’s airports were insured.
Speaking yesterday at the fifth CHINET Aviation Cargo themed: ‘The Emerging Synergy Between Aviation and Insurance,’ held in Lagos, Boyo said: “A lot of the accidents that happen at airports are the direct responsibility of the airports. Because airports are traditionally owned by government, you find the muscle of government oppressing the people. We are talking about insuring passengers, airlines and luggage. What is being done about the principal causative factors of accidents around airports? The inadequacy of their wildlife control. The inadequacy of their derubberisation, their runway. So many other things are not insured. This was removed from Nig. CARs Part 18.”
Reacting to the issue, the Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, said: “All federal government airports managed by FAAN are insured with the insurance up to date.
“Derubberisation and runway hygiene has been intact, records are available. Only areas I would concur are habitation and community issues that have impacted the wildlife or bird strikes and we have been working closely with relevant stakeholders to control.
“The historical runway issues based on structural or engineering issues on some of the runways along with those exceeding their lifespan are being corrected gradually with complete overhauls and maintenance.”
