President Trump on Friday celebrated the latest redistricting moves in Indiana, while pressuring several state senators to support a new map that could offer the GOP two more seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump called the updated map “much fairer” and “improved,” and congratulated the Indiana General Assembly’s GOP leaders for passing a new set of congressional lines earlier Friday.
“It was my Honor to win Indiana six times, including Primaries, in 2016, 2020, and 2024, and this new Map would give the incredible people of Indiana the opportunity to elect TWO additional Republicans in the 2026 Midterm Elections,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“The Indiana Senate must now pass this Map, AS IS, and get it to Governor Mike Braun’s desk, ASAP, to deliver a gigantic Victory for Republicans in the “Hoosier State,” and across the Country,” Trump continued. “I am hearing that these nine Senators, some of whom are up for Re-Election in 2026, and some in 2028, need encouragement to make the right decision.”
The president went on to list the state lawmakers: Blake Doriot, Brett Clark, Brian Buchanan, Dan Dernulc, Ed Charbonneau, Greg Goode, Jim Buck, Rick Niemeyer, and Ryan Mishler.
“Let your voice be heard loud and clear in support of these Senators doing the right thing,” he added.
The new Congressional lines, introduced by Republicans on Monday, passed by a 57-41 vote — and favor Republicans in all nine of the state’s districts, as the GOP seeks to cling to its razor-thin majority. If implemented, the map weakens the 1st and 7th districts, which are currently represented by Reps. Frank Mrvan (D) and André Carson (D), respectively.
The measure faces an uncertain future in the state assembly’s upper chamber, which is expected to take up the measure on Monday.
Trump and his allies have pressured GOP states in recent months to redraw their maps ahead of next year’s midterms. Efforts in the Hoosier State ramped up after Senate leaders failed to garner enough votes to move forward with redistricting.
The president has even threatened to support primary bids against Republicans who oppose the mid-decade redistricting push. Some state lawmakers who have shared skepticism over the issue have also reported being targeted by swatting and bomb threats.
Trump posted again on Saturday, asking “Why would a REAL Republican vote against this when the Dems have been doing it for years???”
“If they stupidly say no, vote them out of Office – They are not worthy – And I will be there to help!” the president wrote. “Thank you Indiana!”
Gov. Mike Braun (R) has voiced his support for the efforts after Trump warned that he “must produce” on adding more GOP seats.
The Supreme Court on Thursday handed Trump a win amid the redistricting race by reviving Texas’s latest map — which offers up to five Republican pickup opportunities. Last month, a panel of federal judges in the state blocked the updated lines from being implemented in the 2026 election after legislation to adopt the map was signed into law by GOP Gov. Greg Abbott.
The fight in the Lone Star State opened up the door for other redistricting battles — including efforts launched by Democrats to counter Republicans. Several of the measures, however, have sparked legal complaints.
