A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify efforts toward eliminating terrorist groups threatening national security.

Fani-Kayode made the call while delivering the keynote address at the 2025 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Akure Branch, themed “Nigeria: Quest for a Utilitarian Judiciary and Roles for Stakeholders.”

He argued that tackling terrorism decisively remains central to restoring peace and stability in the country.

“My belief is that we must eliminate every single terrorist and those who sponsor them,” he said. “I do not believe in dialogue, negotiation, or rehabilitation. I believe in confronting them decisively.”

Fani-Kayode also advised President Tinubu to reconsider any planned diplomatic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, saying such an engagement may not yield positive outcomes for Nigeria.

He claimed the meeting could be unproductive and potentially unfavourable, adding that Nigeria must always safeguard its dignity and sovereignty in international relations.

He further urged the Federal Government to demonstrate strong political will in the fight against terrorism.

“The responsibility lies on the President to wipe out these threats and reassure Nigerians through concrete action,” he said.

NBA Law Week Declared Open

Declaring the 2025 Law Week open, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, described the legal profession as “one of the noblest callings and the backbone of every functional democracy.”

He said the Bar and Bench play crucial roles in shaping governance, ensuring justice, and strengthening public institutions.

“In Ondo State and across Nigeria, the contributions of the legal community to political order, social balance, and economic advancement are immense,” he said.

NBA Akure Branch Chairman, Friday Umar, emphasised the need for a judiciary that is people-centered, efficient, and accessible, urging collaboration among lawyers, government, and other justice-sector stakeholders.

Honours and Awards

To conclude the week’s activities, the NBA honoured Senator Bode Olajumoke as its Grand Patron in recognition of his support for the Bar. The Publisher of Vanguard Media Limited, Mr. Sam Amuka Pemu, received the Friend of the Bar award.

A relaxation centre donated by Senator Olajumoke to the association was also inaugurated by Governor Aiyedatiwa.
