The 115 unity colleges in the country are receiving the attention of the federal government that will see them being repositioned to offer quality education for Nigerian children.

Also, the colleges are being provided with modern teaching facilities that will make teaching and learning conducive.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, stated this in Lagos on Tuesday during the opening of the 2025 Annual General Meeting of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges.

She also reiterated the determination of the Bola Tinubu administration to accord education a place of pride in the scheme of things.

“Education is vital for economic empowerment. Also, principals, who are the accounting officers and the administrative heads of the colleges, play central role, as their administrative capacity will dictate how their schools are run. That will also shape how their students turn out. Students who enrol in their schools must come out better than what they were when they went in.

“I am reaffirming the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Education to revitalize education through curriculum reform, teacher professionalization, and digital technology integration. I urge you to work collectively to restore the lost glory of Unity Colleges as symbols of excellence and national pride,” she stated.

She reminded the principals that they represent the Federal Ministry of Education in their states and must uphold high ethical standards.

On the certification of teachers by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, and their training by the National Teachers Institute, NTI, the minister gave the assurance that the ministry would offer all the necessary support to the teachers.

She disclosed that the NTI would organize training to update the knowledge of teachers, adding that the training could be between four and six months.

Suwaiba also charged the principals to learn from one another, saying peer review of activities and challenges would help them.

She commended the colorful representation of various zones through their uniforms, which symbolizes unity in diversity.

She described the theme of the meeting, “Education for Renewed Hope: Repositioning Secondary Education for Economic Empowerment and National Development,” as timely and relevant.

In his remarks, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education, Hon. Dr. Mark Oseni, commended the Federal Unity Colleges for their dedication to educational excellence.

He promised that the National Assembly would always support efforts at taking education to greater height in the country.

He congratulated schools that received awards for their outstanding performance in national examinations, and encouraged others to strive for excellence.

The Director of Senior Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, expressed gratitude to the Honourable Minister of Education, the Honourable Minister of State, and the Permanent Secretary in the ministry for their leadership and logistical support.
