2026 WCQ Playoffs: Nigeria vs Gabon – preview, date, time and where to watch

Must read

By Enitan Abdultawab

The Super Eagles of Nigeria continue their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they face Gabon in a decisive playoff clash.

With qualification pressure increasing, Nigeria will be aiming to assert dominance and avoid any slip-up.

The winner of this tie goes on to face either of Congo or Cameroon, both whom would also be slugging out on the other side of the playoff divide.

Nigeria head into the tie with renewed confidence after improved performances in recent fixtures, especially the dominant and overwhelming win in the last matchday of the qualifying match against Benin Republic.

The 2024 AFCON finalists were lackluster in most of the qualifying matches, winning just three matches before that commanding victory – a 4-0 win eventually secured their place in the playoffs. South Africa had topped the group and clinched the ticket despite they had three points ducked from them.

Quite differently from Nigeria, Gabon were firm in the group stage qualifying series but just could not catch up with group leaders Ivory Coast, losing the qualification ticket by just one point. They are bracing up to ensure that all efforts do not vain but they have a Super Eagles (and one of Congo or Cameroon) standing between them and the intercontinental playoffs.

For the Super Eagles, controlling midfield tempo, moving the ball quickly in wide areas, and maintaining defensive concentration will be crucial. Efficiency in front of goal may determine the outcome. In addition, they have to be wary of their defense in order to prevent the Gabonese attack from exploiting it. With captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Bouanga leading the line, there might be constant threat in the Nigeria’s defense.

However, it seems like the Super Eagles would trouble the Panthers more. The West-African nation has an in-form Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, and other top players playing across Europe.

Fortunately, all the players are ready to play, except for Semi Ajayi who will be missing the clash Gabon due to accumulation of yellow cards. Should the Super Eagles, the Hull City man would be ready for the match versus Congo or Cameroon.

Historically, the Super Eagles have held the upper hand in meetings against Gabon, winning five of their nine meetings, drawing three, and losing just once. The most remarkable and significant meeting between these two was in 2005 – a match that ended 2-0 in favour of the Super Eagles.

Nigeria and Gabon would not find it easy as there would not be any home advantage as both the semi-finals and final are to be held in Morocco.
