Lagos govt tasks contractors on timely project delivery

LAGOS — THE Lagos State government has warned contractors handling various deflooding projects on the Island to ensure the timely delivery of the projects.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, while addressing the media after an inspection visit to sites at Lagos Island, said the state government was determined to proffer a permanent solution to flooding in Lagos Island.

The Commissioner stressed that the project with regard to the urban regeneration of the axis is expected to bring relief to residents in Lagos Island and environs.

Wahab said: “You cannot make the omelette without breaking the egg, so the pain would be there temporarily, but it is for long-term joy.”

He said the construction of the drainage network, as well as road infrastructure, being jointly undertaken by the Office of Infrastructure, Lagos State Urban Renewal Authority, LASURA and Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, would address perennial flooding issues across Lagos Island and environs.

Wahab said the agencies have different timelines to the project delivery which includes road infrastructure, drainage infrastructure amongst others.

 but the team just wanted to ensure that the timelines are strictly adhered to by the contractors while the quality of the job remains high.

He said the ministry’s team usually visits the areas at interval to supervise and also ensure that the community takes ownership of the construction, urging residents to quickly escalate to the ministry whenever they notice anything unusual.
