Must read

Jos—Tragedy struck in Jos, Plateau State capital, when a passenger train rammed into a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, killing four passengers at Fototek Junction in Jos South Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred when the tricycle rider, in an attempt to beat the oncoming train, ignored repeated honking and warnings from a railway flag bearer stationed at the crossing.

“The train’s honk was loud, but the Keke rider ignored it. Before he could cross, the train met the tricycle,” said an eyewitness, Martha Clement. The impact of the collision crushed the tricycle, killing the rider and three passengers instantly, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The tragic scene drew a crowd of sympathisers, with security operatives later arriving to restore order and evacuate the victims’ remains. The injured were taken to Plateau Specialist Hospital for treatment.

Reacting to the incident, the Plateau State Commissioner for Transport, Davou Gyang, described the tragedy as both painful and avoidable.

He commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

“We mourn with the families affected by this sad event. It is indeed a painful loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. This tragedy underscores the need for every road user to exercise caution and patience, especially around railway intersections,” he said.

Gyang urged motorists, tricycle operators, and pedestrians to always obey traffic and rail safety signals to avoid further loss of lives. He warned that reckless disregard for such regulations endangers everyone on the road.

The Commissioner disclosed that the Ministry is collaborating with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), and other relevant agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and to strengthen safety measures at railway crossings.

He reaffirmed the Plateau State Government’s commitment to enhancing transport safety.
through public education, enforcement of traffic laws, and improved safety infrastructure across the state.

“This government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property. We will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure such tragedies do not recur,” Gyang added.
