PORT HARCOURT: Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah; Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara; and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, have expressed deep concern over the dilapidated condition of the Nigeria Police Force Training School in Nonwa, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The governors made their observations on Thursday during an assessment tour of the facility as part of the activities of the newly inaugurated National Economic Council (NEC) Committee on the Overhaul of Security Training Institutions. The committee—comprising governors and security sector stakeholders—is chaired by Governor Mbah and mandated to produce, within one month, a strategic blueprint for the renovation and modernization of security training institutions across Nigeria.

Upon arrival at the Nonwa Police Training School, the delegation was confronted with visibly deteriorated infrastructure, including collapsed roofs, missing windows, and unkempt surroundings overtaken by overgrown vegetation.

Governor Mbah described the state of the training school as unacceptable, stressing that decades of neglect have undermined efforts to produce well-trained police personnel.

“These institutions have endured decades of neglect. We cannot expect quality police personnel to emerge from decayed and dilapidated training environments,” Mbah said. “The President has recognized that security is paramount and is committed to restoring these institutions. Our task is to assess the facilities and develop a comprehensive plan for renovation and modernization.”

Governor Abiodun reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to reform the security sector, noting that the President’s directive reflects strong political will to strengthen law enforcement capacity nationwide.

“This visit demonstrates the President’s commitment to supporting the law enforcement architecture,” Abiodun said. “We are determined to meet the one-month deadline and ensure these training institutions are refurbished and adequately equipped.”

Governor Fubara described the visit as a crucial step toward enhancing the operational capacity of police personnel and improving overall security in the country.

“We are committed to supporting this effort and ensuring that our police officers are trained to provide top-notch service to the public,” Fubara stated.

The governors are expected to submit their blueprint to the National Economic Council, which will guide targeted interventions for rebuilding and equipping police and other security training institutions nationwide.
