C’ River Assembly to grill education chiefs over stalled teachers’ promotion

Must read

The Cross River House of Assembly on Thursday during plenary summoned key officials in the education sector over the non-implementation of teachers’ promotions across the state.

Those invited include the Commissioner for Education, the Accountant-General, the Auditor-General, and heads of agencies under the education cluster.

The lawmakers’ decision followed the adoption of a motion by Mr Eyo Edet, Member Representing Bakassi State Constituency, who described the situation as unacceptable and harmful to teachers’ morale.

Edet said many teachers had been denied promotions for years, while others who were promoted had yet to enjoy the corresponding salary adjustments.

“Teachers play a vital role in the society, and the selective implementation of their promotions is dampening their morale, affecting education quality and this goes against the People’s First agenda of Gov. Bassey Otu,” he said.

During deliberations, the lawmakers called for transparency and accountability in managing education matters.

They stressed that prompt implementation of promotions would boost teachers’ motivation and demonstrate government’s commitment to staff welfare.

They noted that the problem had persisted from previous administrations and commended the current government’s efforts to correct irregularities in the state workforce.

The lawmakers also blamed the delays on fraudulent activities of some corrupt officials and urged immediate action to bring culprits to justice.

At the end of deliberations, the Assembly resolved to work with relevant agencies to ensure lasting solutions to the issue.

Speaker of the House, Mr Elvert Ayambem, reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to addressing challenges affecting teachers and the education sector.

He pledged sustained oversight to ensure compliance with promotion and implementation policies in the state civil service.
