Max Dowman of Arsenal created history on Tuesday by being the first 15-year-old to participate in the UEFA Champions League, moving Lamine Yamal and Youssoufa Moukoko to second and third place, respectively.
Every season pushes the limits of how young a player may be when entering Europe’s largest club competition, and the UEFA Champions League has long been a platform for up-and-coming talents to showcase themselves to the world.
In this article, we shall take a look at ten (10) youngest players to have played in the UEFA Champions League.
Max Dowman (15 years 308 days)
With 17 minutes left in a 3-0 triumph, the Arsenal midfielder made his debut for the team in the league phase against Slavia Praha, replacing Leandro Trossard. Before being given the chance to play as a late replacement in Czechia, Dowman was used as a substitute twice during the competition.
Youssoufa Moukoko (16 years 18 days)
Only a few days after turning 16, Moukoko made Champions League history as the youngest player when he played for Borussia Dortmund against Zenit St Petersburg in December 2020. His debut solidified Dortmund’s reputation for believing in young talent on the greatest stage. He was well-known for his prolific scoring at the youth level.
Lamine Yamal (16 years 68 days)
Yamal established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young prospects when he made his Champions League debut for Barcelona against Royal Antwerp in September 2023. He continues to establish himself as one of the future stars of both club and nation because of his self-assurance, dribbling and maturity with the ball. At the age of 16 years and 223 days, he began the Round of 16 first leg against Napoli, making history as the youngest player to feature in the knockout round.
Celestine Babayaro (16 years 86 days)
For more than 20 years, Babayaro was the youngest player in the competition when he played for Anderlecht against FCSB in November 1994. Despite being sent off in that match, the experience laid the groundwork for a successful career that eventually brought him to Chelsea and the Nigerian national team.
Rayan Cherki (16 years 102 days)
In November 2019, Cherki made his Champions League debut for Lyon against Zenit. He continued the club’s tradition of developing local offensive talent, drawing recognition for his flair, inventiveness, and outstanding technical ability as a graduate of Lyon’s esteemed academy.
Alen Halilovic (16 years 128 days)
In October 2012, Halilovic played for Dinamo Zagreb against Paris Saint-Germain. His early exposure to professional football demonstrated Dinamo Zagreb’s steady production of academy graduates and positioned him as one of Europe’s most talented adolescent playmakers at the time.
Youri Tielemans (16 years 148 days)
Tielemans made his first Champions League appearance for Anderlecht against Olympiacos on October 2, 2013. Even as a teenager, he showed remarkable composure and passing range, qualities that would later define his career in Belgium, France and England.
Francesco Camarda (16 years 226 days)
Camarda made an appearance for AC Milan against Club Brugge in the Champions League on the 21st of October, 2024. Known for his prolific scoring record at youth level, his introduction reflected Milan’s intention to build its future project around emerging young talents. His arrival demonstrated Milan’s dedication to developing around a new generation of youthful talent, since he was well-known for his outstanding goal totals at the junior level.
Warren Zaïre-Emery (16 years 228 days)
On October 25, 2022, Zaïre-Emery made his PSG Champions League debut against Maccabi Haifa. The French outfit demolished Maccabi Haifi by seven goals to two.
He went from being an academy hopeful to a first-team staple very rapidly thanks to his maturity in midfield, powerful physical presence, and tactical understanding.
Charalampos Mavrias (16 years 241 days)
Mavrias appeared in the Champions League for Panathinaikos against Rubin Kazan in October 2010. Seen as one of Greece’s brightest young prospects at the time, his early involvement highlighted the club’s emphasis on nurturing and promoting homegrown talent to the European spotlight.
