Federal prosecutors subpoena records related to Fani Willis travel: Report

Must read

A day after securing an indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, the Trump Department of Justice is reportedly going after another opponent of the president.

The New York Times late Friday said it had reviewed a federal grand jury subpoena for records related to Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis’s travel history.

Information about the subpoena was scant. The Times wrote that not only was the scope of the probe unclear, but that it was also uncertain if Willis was the target.

Willis came to national fame as the Fulton County DA with she indicted Trump in an election interference case. Trump called for her impeachment in 2023 and she has been seen as one of a number local officials who might garner attention from the president.

The Georgia Supreme Court earlier this month ended Willis’s bid to remain atop her election interference criminal prosecution against Trump. In a 4-3 decision, the court declined to review a lower ruling disqualifying Willis over a “significant appearance of impropriety” stemming from her romantic relationship with a top prosecutor on the case.

That ended any chance of the case moving forward, though Willis said she hoped “that whoever is assigned to handle the case will have the courage to do what the evidence and the law demand.”

Steve Sadow, Trump’s lead attorney in Georgia, in a statement said the state’s high court had “correctly denied review.”

Speculation has mounted that the indictment of Comey is a precursor of attempts to go after other Trump opponents.

The Times reported that the federal investigators in Georgia are looking into records related to travel Willis may have taken around the time of the 2024 election. It said the inquiry was being led by the office of U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Theodore S. Hertzberg.
