The China Mining Federation of Nigeria has dismissed reports alleging that Chinese mining companies are infiltrating Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and engaging in illegal activities, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the federation said it had observed the renewed circulation of media reports accusing some Chinese nationals of illegal mining, seizure of critical mineral resources, environmental degradation, and alleged links to terrorist activities.
Addressing the terrorism-related allegations, the federation described the claims as completely unfounded, stressing that Chinese mining firms operating in Nigeria have themselves been victims of terrorist attacks.
It added that Chinese companies in Nigeria have consistently supported the Federal Government’s efforts to safeguard national security and remain willing to cooperate fully to ensure a safe and stable operating environment.
The federation said Chinese mining companies operating in Nigeria strictly comply with the country’s laws and regulations in line with the guidance of the Chinese government, while working closely with Nigerian authorities to strengthen governance in the mining sector.
According to the statement, the companies have also responded to Nigeria’s industrialisation goals in the mining sector by making investments, establishing local processing facilities, and employing Nigerian workers. These efforts, it said, have boosted local employment, increased value addition, and helped translate Nigeria’s mineral resources into tangible development benefits.
The federation further noted that Chinese mining firms have contributed to host communities through corporate social responsibility initiatives and environmental protection measures, thereby strengthening China–Nigeria cooperation in the mining sector.
It urged Nigerian media organisations and the public to report on the activities of Chinese mining companies in a fair and objective manner, warning that the spread of misinformation could undermine bilateral relations between Nigeria and China.
The federation reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to deepen cooperation in the mining sector, support Nigeria’s economic and social development, and ensure that the partnership delivers mutual benefits.
