PORT HARCOURT — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that a total of 7,715 road traffic crashes were recorded across the country between January and September 2025.

The Corps also confirmed that 3,915 people lost their lives, while 24,674 sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incidents.

Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, gave the figures in Port Harcourt on Thursday during the National Town Hall Meeting and Ember Months Road Safety Campaign Flag-Off themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety; Stop Distracted Driving.”

Mohammed said the figures represent an increase compared to the same period in 2024, noting that the rising trend is a cause for concern.

According to him: 7,715 crashes were recorded nationwide in 2025 — a 10.04% increase from 7,011 crashes in 2024.

24,674 people were injured, compared to 22,373 in 2024 — a 10.28% rise.

3,915 deaths were recorded, higher than the 3,811 deaths in 2024 — an 11.55% increase.

On the situation in Rivers State, Mohammed said the state recorded 15 deaths, 51 injuries, and 47 crashes within the same period — numbers that indicate a 35.7% reduction in fatalities and a 37.5% drop in injuries compared to 2024.

He attributed the improvements in Rivers to better emergency response and increased road safety awareness.

Mohammed described the national statistics as “an alarming reminder that road crashes can destroy families, weaken communities, and impose socio-economic burdens on the nation.” He urged road users to exercise discipline, caution and vigilance while on the highways.

He added that the choice of Rivers State to host the Ember Months Campaign flag-off was deliberate, given its role as one of Nigeria’s busiest transportation hubs.

Mohammed further explained that the FRSC has enhanced its proactive interventions, expanded public awareness campaigns, strengthened operations and deployed technology-driven approaches to improve road safety nationwide.

Fubara cautions drivers against over-speeding

In his keynote address, the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, warned motorists and boat operators to avoid negligence and over-speeding throughout the festive season.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Benibo Anabraba, Fubara urged the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Maritime Workers Union to intensify sensitisation of their members on the dangers of reckless driving, drink-driving and other unsafe behaviours.

The governor noted that although the state has continued to improve its road infrastructure, the persistence of accidents shows that driver behaviour remains a major cause of crashes.
